H114: Western Civilization, 1648 to Present

This course is a survey of Western Civilization from the early modern period through the twentieth century.  Our primary historical focus will be on the issue of imperialism since 1450.  However, we will explore a number of other themes, including those of class, race, and gender.  Our key theoretical concern will be with the nature of historical change itself.  Who makes history?  What is the role of the individual in the process of history?  What is the role of the community in the process of history?  In what ways are individuals and communities able to effect change?  In what ways are individuals and communities constrained by their contexts?
